The alcohol hair test is an indicator of a behavioral issue — not current impairment. It measures average alcohol consumption over a period of approximately three months, indicates the level of alcohol use during that time period, and can indicate a pattern of excessive use—a behavior rather than an event. The test measures the amount of ethyl glucuronide (EtG) in the hair – a trace metabolite of ethanol and a direct alcohol biomarker – and follows the guidelines determined by the World Health Organization in association with the Society of Hair Testing for measuring consumption.

Why do employers test for alcohol in hair?
Alcohol abuse or addiction can cause many work-related problems. If an employee is drinking right before or during working hours it can lead to lost productivity, absenteeism, injuries, accidents, and even death. Research has shown that most alcohol-related work performance problems are caused by non-dependent alcohol drinkers who may occasionally drink too much and are not exclusive to alcohol-dependent employees. In order to maintain the safest working environment, and for the safety & health of employees, employers should test for alcohol through hair testing.
